Category Manager Basics

You can manage your product offerings through the use of categories. Categories can be used to group similar items together and give your store a more natural flow. For example, if you are selling electronic consumer items such as audio and video equipment, you can have specific categories that group those items into their own headings - video equipment in one category, audio equipment in another. If necessary, you can also have sub-categories to further refine your product listings.

Category Group

Category Groups are the top level of the Category tree. This should be a name that represents all the categories & sub-categories under it. Examples would be : (Office Supplies, Food & Grocery, Computers & Accessories, Video Games, Furniture and so on). If you have been in a big box store like Walmart think of how they group like items together with overhead signs that say things like Food & Grocery, Clothing, Automotive and so on.

Categories

Categories are listed under a Group Category as its "Parent Group". When adding subsequent categories, you will be given the option of designating whether the new category will have products listed under it or have additional categories under it.

Sub-Categories

When sub-categories are present in a "parent" category. As in Categories a Sub-Category can have additional Categories listed in it or products. Once the category is created, a link to the category page will be present on your live store. Some themes will display the category tree as a list, while other themes will display the categories as a drop-down menu, this is dependent on your design settings.
